The Laureate-My New Year's Toast

We do not know what comes this year,
but raise and quaff your cup,
We’ll cope with what there is to fear
once we sober up.

The Laureate-January 2015

We best address the new year.
Remember that which passed
was ne’er beyond that we control,
and need not this year last.

The Laureate-Islamic State

Islam now has Isis,
most vicious terror in the world.
If Muslims say peace is their way,
what Qur’an page have they unfurled.

The Laureate-Survival of the Fittest

The fittest survive, Chuck Darwin said,
but some who endure are those to dread.
The parasite who sucks on host
can be the death of the purebred.
(feed the needy...not the greedy)

The Laureate-Let the Season's Spirit Live

Food and gifts to needy sent…
the kinship felt seems evident.
We send them our goodwill and love
and wish them blessings from above.
But have we summed the times this year
we offered them our love and cheer?

This season let us firm resolve
to help our neighbor’s woes dissolve.
And from this day let us firm vow
provide them food and clothes and plow…
Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas ham
are but two meals for hungry Man.

The Laureate-Tis The Season

It's not a meal in late November,
nor gifts exchanged in each December.
It is love shared throughout the years
that we hold dear...and will remember.

The Laureate-Earth's Water

Comets or asteroids
some boffins choose to say,
is how Earth formed the oceans vast...
but does it matter anyway?
Stupid men pollute the seas
and do not seem to give a damn.
They throw their trash as if were cache,
till some new comets choose to ram.
{Then there’ll be none to think...or drink!}

The Laureate-Too Blue...Brings Boo

Too Blue...Brings Boo.
(IDA, International Dark-Sky Association)
(LED, Light Emitting Diodes.)

The IDA has much to say
on LEDs too blue...
and seems to say too Kelvin (K)
is bad for skies, and you.

At first I was affright...
tossed and turned throughout the night
As a male oft clad in blue,
I feared the curse concerned me too.

I vow to ne’er be blue again...
ne’er to mope near mice nor men...
till found that damnable LED
is used by science... and rare by me.

The Laureate-December 7, 1941

Though young I still remember
how on that fateful day,
the look of shock in mother’s eyes
said our world had turned gray.

Then came the depravation...
rationing for our army’s needs.
The radio and the cinema
swelled our hearts with their brave deeds.

Resolve and toil helped win that war,
o’er seventy years our land stands free,
but those who bore that world war
know we must watch foes constantly.

The Laureate-Illegal’s Amnesty law suit.

Seventeen states would sue the Feds
because the Prez assures perps beds.
They surely know, once on the docket,
Fed Judges come from Prez’ pocket.
{Fire for effect?}

The Laureate-Baryons

Baryons
New Atomic Particles?
I became a physicist
in nineteen hundred and sixty-five.
My peers, it seems, have atoms stuffed
more than I thought could ere survive.

I must believe that which they say...
for should I try to prove them wrong,
I’d have to build a CERN beltway...
that’s seventeen miles long.
{...It's best I trust them.}

The Laureate-Ferguson and Beyond

Burnings, riots, parades in streets,
shouts of rage and angry tweets,
from those who know not all the facts...
as their pent up bile excretes.

Know now the years where bias slaked
and fellowship for all awaked,
your actions set your cause aback...
and stress all bonds till they may break.

The Laureate-Thanksgiving

For what can I be thankful
when I peruse the news?
Our world is filled with suffering
and terrorism brews.

I’m thankful I’m American,
where freedoms are assured.
I’m thankful for my kith and kin,
whose love o’er time endured.
I’m thankful for my health...
regardless how I ache.
I’m thankful that God grants me life...
but pray it’s no mistake.

The Laureate-An Unfair Fare

The tray pains gut, so gear you hug.
and the seats are much too snug.
If all aboard are not petite,
a customer can’t even shrug.

It’s plain to see such vile design
does not a human have in mind...
only a sadist would have you sit
in chairs that bind and won’t recline.
{...you may soon have more than enough seats.}

The Laureate-The Future

Rapacious man, since time began,
found life on earth mere also-ran.
And now it seems these parasites
have our planet overran.

They only sate their here and now...
must let our progeny cope somehow?
In the past our heroes have answered call...
must we leave youth to steer the prow?

For twenty minutes of each hour,

I have to turn the volume down

it’s from the din the ads obtain.
(Didn’t our pols solved this problem?)

Taxpayers spent a ton of cash
that penalty would not be rash.
First jury could not take her life

no need the burden be on them.
Let Jodi choose ...death or stockade.

The Laureate-Ebola

Dear Prez:
You’ve often asked our soldiers fight
against a foe across the sea.
They left the land of their birthright
to face a virulent enemy.
You now propose to send our men
to fight a foe that few now know,
with weapons far beyond their ken,
and could be our new Alamo.

Send aid to help the land in need,
but not our troops to intercede.

The Laureate-Your Coming Vote

You’ve watched the boos and bravos
from candidates and their foes.
Now you must pick the honest words
from what the half-truth ads disclose.

You’ve read the replies on issues
that made some search for tissues...
from answers that were so oblique
they knew those were just ballyhoos.

No wonder fans of Blue and Red
tend to vote the tint instead...
a guide that’s fraught with danger
if parties merely stay inbred.

The Laureate-The Retired

It is such a crying shame
when we let our skills go lame...
for talents atrophy when we retire.

But, know you not your aptitude
retreats for but an interlude...
when reaching for the goal that you aspire.

So hone your skills, on pleasant tasks,
help your neighbor when he asks...
you’ll find your charity may both inspire.
