The Laureate-August

I never did like August
…the eighth month of the year.
They say named for the emperor
that Cleo learned to fear.
He whipped the butt of Anthony
but Cleo took last gasp
before the mighty conqueror
could grasp her writhing asp.

I sought more facts on August
and laugh at what they show
when they declare its birthstone
a gem called peridot.
They say it’s yellow-green,
like bile, which oft I heave,
when I react to August
if summer’s heat won’t leave.

The Laureate-To The Voters

Why give a pol your vote
if he but others criticize?
The men we need must spread their seed
and prove to us they’re wise.
Then they must show that they can meet
 with other learned men,
and give and take ‘till problems solved...
for they’re deserving then.

The Laureate-In The News

O’er most news you have no control.
For that you have, need where to go.
‘Tis best it but instruct you...
to not react...most apropros.

The Laureate-Goodbye Golf

I loved to golf, but never good...
clubs mattered not if steel or wood.
When back ills made my game degrade,
I had to quit...friends joy withstood.
(Because, good friends, I understood.)

The Laureate-To Congress

You send our sons to threats and war...
when they are harmed you seem but snore.
We give them aid each time we’re asked...
but fools, that’s what our vote was for!

The Laureate=To Vlad...

You’re sponsoring both louts and fools,
supplying them with deadly tools.
We find now they are terrorists,
and you deserve the ridicules.

The Laureate-Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin your fame has spread
from man of strength to man to dread.
Misuse of strength is tyrannous...
Shakespeare, now the world, has said.

(Measure for Measure)

The Laureate-My Journey's End

Auto, boat, bus, train or plane
Bode queues, long waits, hard seats, back pain...
down payments for a journey
to gems my heart may e'er retain.

The Laureate-Hackers

Hackers
They are the lowest of the low...
deeper than whale feces go...
viruses formed from deep their soul...
with deeds so cruel they dare not show.

The Laureate-Illegal Children, redux

Illegal Children
If South and Mid Americas
want their kids to be raised by us.
Let’s vow to ne'er vacation there
with planes, boats, trains or bus.

The Laureate-To Those That Govern

The Illegal Problem
When small you chose to just ignore.
It grew...you failed to bar our door.
Now we’ve a monster with which to contend,
and we are the masters no more.

The Laureate-Illegals, etal

Illegals, etal
Pols Red and Blue now wait for you
to vote before they solve our plight.
If they must wait to cogitate,
in Congress few are erudite.
(Problems seldom fade away,
but Man’s trust can oft decay.)

The Laureate-Independence Day

Independence Day
As you gaze upon the sky
as rockets fill the night,
and Sousa’s marches make you cry…
our flag lumed by their light,
remember good men fight and die
to shield our dear birthright.

The Laureate-World Soccer Game

World Soccer Game
We may have lost a soccer game,
but never quenched our Nation’s fame.
We played the sport two hours, and more...
and ‘twas but time that overcame?
